Catch the Rabbit by Lana Bastašić6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() The journey would prove to be much more than an innocuous reconnecting of old school friends: it is a road to a deeply balkanized "heart of darkness," where Lejla's life was reshaped by strict identity politics and her sense of self was lost together with a single letter from her name. But something within her knows she will end up taking a plane… Sara is reluctant to go as she has managed to build a new life in Ireland, away from the ghosts and horrors of the past. ![]() Twelve years after they last saw each other, Sara (who has been living in Dublin all these years) receives a phone call from Lejla (her closest friend from childhood) in which Lejla asks Sara to fly to Mostar and help her go on a road trip from Mostar to Vienna in order to find Armin, Lejla's long lost brother. The boy's mother had little to work with financially and otherwise. The novel, which is told from the perspective of the protagonist of the novel, the boy, starts when the boy was born. Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperheadfollows a young boy who was born to a teenage single mother. Of course, with a show you have more episodes and more time to flesh characters out and to make the viewer bond with the characters, which may be a factor, but I felt like a lot of the characters in Rats Saw God weren't very fleshed out at all. ![]() You can see the same writing style and a lot of similarities between this book and Veronica Mars but I think Veronica Mars feels more advanced and you can tell he improved on his weaker areas by the time it came to writing the show. ![]() I think it's easy to tell that this was pre-Veronica Mars and Party Down, though. Both horrifying and funny, I haven’t read a book that delves so interestingly into the dark side of a child’s mind in a long time. As she sees her family falling apart, the eight year old elder daughter, Zara turns to island magic called “grigri” to try and cure what she sees as the problem. This is a family that was in trouble long before they reached the shores of the Seychelles, but things have a habit of developing quickly in the tropics. It appears to be a book that gets very mixed reviews, many hated it, some loved it. It is also a vivid account of the dark side of Eden and the negative effect of colonialism. This is the story of the disintegration of a family over the course of a year spent in paradise on the Seychelles. ![]() Edge of Eden by Helen Benedict cast a spell over me with it’s oppressive edginess. ![]() |
